Western Digital’s highest-performing storage products carry the WD Black brand, and today five new external storage drives have been added to it and aimed squarely at gamers.
The storage company is reacting to a change in the gaming marketplace which is seeing more of us download our PC and console games rather than purchasing physical copies on disc. At the same time, it’s not uncommon for a single game to require upwards of 50GB of storage space, which soon eats up your available internal storage, especially in game consoles.
Susan Park, vice president of product management, content solutions, Western Digital, explains, “We constantly hear from gamers about how the performance and capacity limitations of their current systems challenge the quality of their gaming experiences … We are helping make room for the latest releases, whether a gamer has been playing for years or is just starting out and looking for a high-performance edge.”
Five new external drives have been added to the WD Black line-up. They include the P50, two variants of the D10, and two variants of the P10 drive. The WD Black P50 Game Drive offers 2TB of SSD storage and is seen as a “first-to-industry” drive as it uses a USB 3.2 gen 2×2 port allowing for 2,000MB/s read speeds. It includes a five-year limited warranty, but pricing has yet to be announced.
The D10 Game Drive offers 8TB of storage using a 7,200rpm hard drive with active cooling and costs $199.99, where as the D10 Game Drive for Xbox One pushes that up to 12TB and includes a three-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. It costs $299.95. Both drives include a three-year limited warranty.
Finally we have the P10 Game Drive and Xbox One variant. The standard P10 will ship in capacities between 2TB ($89.99) and 5TB ($149.99), and connects via a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. The P10 Game Drive for Xbox One will ship in capacities between 3TB ($109.99) and 5TB ($149.99) and includes a two-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. Both these drives include a three-year limited warranty.
The P10 Game Drive is already available to buy, where as the P10 for Xbox One, D10, and D10 Xbox One variant all launch before the end of this quarter. The P50 won’t arrive until the fourth quarter of this year.
